From Polish developer group Nibris comes Raid Over the River, a vertical shooter for the Nintendo DS. Recently, Nibris revealed a little bit of the story and gameplay behind the game. Raid over the River is the first title in a planned series of two games (the second one is going to be appearing on the Nintendo Wii).

According to Nibris, ROtR is a title which is going to change the current image of vertical shooters as meaningless, arcade games which only test player's reflexes. It is a title which is going to exploit the genre's potential, which according to the development team, has not been realized so far. Mark Okon, the game's designer, said that the game will provide a one-of-a-kind experience through the utilization of classical shooter techniques, innovative original solutions, and an extensive storyline.

The game's storyline takes place over a 3000 year period; spreading over 6 dimensions related to Earth and putting the characters before a ton of choices, the consequences of which the player will have to bear as the game wears on. Everything starts in Peru, where archaeologists reveal an artifact of unknown origin. The knowledge it carries enables travelling in time.

In the game, the players take on the role of agent Carrie Collins (29), a pilot in an air strike quick response group TARPA. The story begins when a tunnel opens on Earth, from which some scouts from a different dimension emerge.

Raid Over the River offers six extensive campaigns taking place in different time dimensions: from ancient Greece through Europe of World War II, the Soviet Russia of the Cold War, the present day United States, to Germany of 2018 and Japan in the future. Each campaign has its own unique vehicle to navigate. There is a vast array of weapons at the player's disposal – from core ammunition, sonic blasters to plasma cannons. Of course there are also going to be special attacks, such as help from the wingmen, intelligent missiles, particle blasters, gravity bombs, and remote controlled laser attacks from a satellite.

The ships themselves will not be moving in one dimension, but will also rotate, nose-dive, and do barrel-rolls. This allows much more freedom to dodge enemy fire than in previous vertical shooters.

The innovative system of special attacks will take advantage of the touch screen and microphone offered by DS. Finally, expect the controls to be fully configurable.

Here are the modes of play the developers are planning to include:

Single Player:
- Story Mode
- Arcade
- Dogfight
- Survival

Multiplayer:
- Cooperative
- The Raid
- Raid over the Galaxy
- Special mode

The game is set to release in the first half of 2007, exclusively for the Nintendo DS. NintendoSpin will have much more on Raid Over the River as the project nears launch.
