Edge Magazine has suggested that an enhanced Wii console, capable of DVD playback, will be released in Japan. However, Nintendo have stated that there are currently ‘no plans’ to release such a machine in America or Europe.
A statement in September confirmed that “in Europe (and the Americas), we have no plans for a DVD option either internally or as an accessory at this time. DVD players are now sold so cheaply and the penetration rate is so high that we did not think it was worth including [DVD Playback] and raising the price of Wii.”
Such a move should come as no surprise to Nintendo followers. The release of the Panasonic Q, a DVD-compatible GameCube, in Japan raised hopes of DVD playback on a Nintendo machine back at the beginning of the current generation, but the machine was never released outside of Japan.
