PlayStation 3 Delayed

Nintendo Wii News Posted by James Batchelor

Sony have announced that the Playstation 3 will be delayed until to March 2007.

This revision to the release date will only affect PAL regions, including Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia, so the planned launch dates for Japan and North America are currently unchanged.

The delay has been attributed to problems with the mass production of the blue laser diode, a component that affects some of the key features of the console.

Despite the delay, the forecast of global Playstation 3 shipments by the end of the fiscal year is unchanged, with Sony hoping to shift 6 million units.

This news is something of a blessing to European Wii followers. Assuming Nintendo are still able to stage a relatively global launch, the Wii will have at least four months headstart over Sony's console.

This will be the first time that a Nintendo console has not only arrived in Europe within weeks of launches in other regions, but also the first time Nintendo have released their machine ahead of archrivals, Sony.

It should also promise a much stronger launch than anticipated. Had the Playstation 3 been launched within the same month as Wii, sales would have suffered as many consumers can only afford one console in the run-up to Christmas.

As the only new thing on the menu as we approach the tail end of the year, the Wii is set to have a very merry Christmas.
