Wii hits one million UK sales

Miscellaneous News Posted by James Batchelor

ChartTrack figures show that Nintendo Wii is sitting comfortably in one million homes throughout the UK, making it the fastest selling console in our country's history.

Wii surpassed the 1 million milestone in just 38 weeks, outselling former record-holder PlayStation 2, which took 50 weeks to achieve the same sales, and next generation competitor Xbox 360, which took a full 60 weeks to sell one million units in the UK.

Much like the Nintendo DS, Wii's success lies in the continually impressive sales outside of the industry's traditional high-sales seasons, thanks largely to its appeal to new, more casual audiences who do not care about seasonality or launch dates as Nintendo's more hardcore following do.

Nintendo's Wii and DS now makes up for 68 per cent and 86 per cent of the UK console market respectively. As a result, Nintendo's sales momentum shows no sign of slowing as we approach the ever-important Christmas season.

David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK said: "The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for video games in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement. The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages.

"With more great games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Endless Ocean launching in 2007, Wii, together with Nintendo DS, will continue to be the main driving forces behind the expansion of the video games market this year."

We knew it was coming, but now it's official. It's a testament to Nintendo's success that their on track to outdo the Gamecube's lifetime sales (just over a million) in a little under a year. No matter how badly you think the Cube did, this is impressive and shows how complete Nintendo's turnaround is.

What I don't understand is, if people are still struggling to find Wiis, and Nintendo are struggling to make them, how are they selling so well?

Hmm...
