Nintendo's DS handheld system is getting a facelift. On Sunday, Nintendo begins selling the lighter, brighter DS Lite in the U.S. The DS Lite is a more compact, lightweight version of the DS, and features four adjustable brightness levels for its dual screens. The added brightness is the key selling point for the DS Lite.
The "polar-white" (as per Nintendo) DS Lite measures 5.2 by 2.9 by 0.85 with the case closed (compared with the DS, which measures 5.9 by 3.3 by 1.1 inches) and features two 3-inch color, backlit screens with 256-by-192 pixel resolution.
The lower of the two screens of the DS Lite offers the same touch-screen capabilities as the original DS. The device comes with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (802.11b), which lets you connect wirelessly to chat and play with other Nintendo DS or DS Lite owners for free.
Like the DS, the DS Lite is backward-compatible with Nintendo GameBoy Advance games, with a separate media port for Game Boy Advance cartridges. There are also ports for headphones and a microphone.
The DS Lite is available for $129.99 (list).
