Review: Proporta Nintendo DS Leather Case and Screen Protector

Nintendo DS Impression Posted by Saul Santiago

Aluminum/Leather Case:

Proporta's aluminum-lined leather case, with its soft leather cover and open-sided design, looks reminiscent to the leather cases used for PDA and PocketPC covers. This isn't surprising, considering that Proporta also provides covers for those devices. Still, it's nice to see a sleeker cover than the ones usually reserved for videogame handhelds. In the case of the DS Lite, you definitely don't want to cover up it's beautiful glossy finish at all. But, if you must (and you should, considering how fragile the outer case is), Proporta's black leather case is a good option.

You slip the bottom half of the DS Lite into the case, then fold the top over the Lite. This seals the lite and protects it from minor falls and scratches to the glossy outer surface. As a bonus, you don't have to remove the case to play the DS, since you can fold open the cover and play while the cover is still attached to the bottom half of the DS. The case also offers access to the stylus, charging slot, volume control, and headphone slot while playing, and even while closed.

The aluminum lining within the leather case is what provides protection from shock. It's sturdy enough for minor falls, though the open sides means that the DS Lite can still get scratched if it falls at a weird angle. Still, through unintentional testing, I can confirm that the case provides enough protection for at least a five foot fall onto ceramic floors. That kind of protection, along with the convenience of not having to remove the cover while you play, definitely make this a case to look into for DS Lite owners.

Screen Protectors:
The Proporta Screen Protector Kit comes with two screen protectors, one for the touch screen, and one for the top screen. The touch screen protector is smaller to fit within the raised edges of the bottom screen, while the top screen protector covers the entire surface area of the top screen, including the black edges. The kit also includes a lint free cloth and an applicator card.

Application: One of the most frustrating things about screen protectors is actually getting them on the screen without bubbles and lint. Fortunately, the Proporta screen protectors come with a plastic application card to help you squeeze out the bubbles. It also helps that they are washable and re-usable, meaning you'll be able to wipe them and start over if you mess up or you accumulate too much lint on your first try. I was able to get the touch screen protector on relatively easy, but I struggled a bit with the top screen one. After washing and cleaning the protector, I re-applied it with only a small bubble on the side (due to my accidentally bending a tip of the protector). Unfortunately, the screen protector kit only comes with one pair, so I wasn't able to start the process over without the bent tip.

Visibility/Durability: The screen protectors are, for all intents and purposes, invisible. Except for the tiny bubble in the black area of the top screen, it's nearly impossible to tell that I'm using screen protectors. This is especially important for the incredibly bright DS screens, which make even little specs of dust very visible and annoying. It's the same with the touch screen, with the screen protector being invisible and adding a very soft, smooth surface that finally allows you to use your fingers without worrying about scratching the screen. In putting it through its paces, I played WarioWare, Advance Wars, Meteos, and Metroid, using both my fingers and the stylus. Not only is the touch screen protector durable, but it also provides excellent resistance to the smudges you get from using your fingers.
