A Look Back At The Conference

Nintendo amazed their fans with demonstrations of the Wii and trailers from new games during their press release at E3 on May 9th, 2006.

Shigeru Miyamoto started off by conducting an orchestra from Twilight Princess using the revolutionary Wii controller.

Soon after his demonstration there was an amazing series of trailers from upcoming games for the Wii.

The trailers included:

* Red Steel.
* Excitetruck.
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
* Super Mario Galaxy.
* A drumming type game.
* Various sports which included tennis golf and baseball.
* A game that enables you to be an orchestra’s conductor.
* A flight game from Hudson.

There were a few segments of mini-games showing various things like using a hula hoop, playing ping-pong, cutting fabric, running, and balancing. These could be features from WarioWare that is scheduled for release at lunch.

Reggie Fils-Aime came back and gave an interesting speech on the philosophy at Nintendo as well as explaining the choice for the name for the console. Basically it all boiled down to that change is good.

Another round of amazing trailers was displayed.

The trailers included:

Reggie, along others of Nintendo of America, came back to reveal some anticipated information about the upcoming Zelda: Twilight Princess and how its controls work. Reggie also announced there will be TWO versions of Twilight Princess released. One will be exclusive for the GameCube and the other exclusive for the Wii and its launch

Reggie then goes on speaking about upcoming Wii titles like “Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy, Project H.A.M.M.E.R and Disaster: Day of Crisis. He told us SEGA’s response, ‘It’s time to put Sonic back into gear’. He also mentions the exclusive Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles from Square-Enix. Madden football will never be the same according to Reggie. Balance will be implemented in Activision’s Tony Hawk. Even Spongebob gets new treatment. Then he hands the stage over to members of Ubisoft Paris who were ready to demonstrate how Red Steel works

Next, came a wave of trailers for upcoming DS games.

The trailers included:

* Star Fox DS
* Yoshi’s Island 2
* Diddy Kong Racing
* Final Fantasy III
* Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam
* The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

100+ DS games are intended to be released in the upcoming year.

More trailers followed and were accompanied by videos displaying informative text about the games. This set of trailers ended with the text, “playing = believing”.

Satoru Iwata, NCL president, then took the stage and explained their intentions with Wii.
He explained the solution to the industry’s problems,
“The logical solution is to reinvent the relationship between player and game, and the game controller interface”.

After this rather lengthy speech, Reggie came back to Shigeru Miyamoto yet again. It was during this time that he announced the winner of the AOL.com contest and he became the first consumer ever to play with the Wii controller.
He was able to compete with Miyamoto, Iwata, Reggie and a NOA rep in a 2 vs. 2 tennis match

To conclude the press conference, Reggie had two points he wanted to enforce; “Change is GOOD” and ” Playing is believing”. He then thanked the audience for watching the show.
